Morning Pages | Daily Journaling for Clarity and Productivity

Morning Pages has been a part of my morning routine since the beginning of 2017. Once I left my full-time job at the end of January, I found myself having slow, easy mornings to enjoy. My typical day usually starts off by turning on my “chill beats” playlist on Spotify, open up a clean page in my journal, and start fearlessly writing. With consistency, Morning Pages will provide more clarity, ease your anxieties, and increase your productivity.

I created a short and sweet video about Morning Pages here!

Morning Pages is a concept from The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. It is a journaling exercise done first thing every morning. You write 3 pages of anything that crosses your mind. It’s not meant to sound like fancy writing; it barely even has to make sense. It is basically a mind dumping exercise to bring you more clarity for the rest of your day. However you happen to feel that morning, wether that’s stressed out, happy, grumpy, emotional, emotionless.. put it all on paper. That way, you have a clear mind and those thoughts aren’t eating at your consciousness all day.

Some things I like to write about are: my current thoughts & feelings, recap of the previous day, things I have to do today, what I’m grateful for, my dreams and aspirations, positive affirmations, and the occasional angry rant šŸ˜‰ I like to write my thoughts exactly as they come into my mind. I don’t hold back; I just keep on writing.Ā I find that Morning Pages has helped eased my anxieties, provide clarity, and increase my productivity.

The first page is typically easy and by the second and third page you may be at a loss of what to write. But keep going. Dig deep into all of the dark corners of your consciousness and you may discover new insight and breakthroughs.

The most important part is to not overthink Morning Pages. It is not meant to be an art. Just get into a state of flow and let your thoughts run wild. Three pages, every morning, & watch your clarity unfold.

Has anyone done this before? Let me know your experience! I really find that although life isn’t going 100% in my vision, I’m still focused on my goals and intentions through consistent journaling šŸ™‚ Again check out my videoĀ here!

Stop Feeding your Negative Narrative

“We are products of our past, but we don’t have to be prisoners of it” ~Rick Warren

One of the most liberating feelings is knowing we can take steps to create whatever life we dream of. The only things holding usĀ back are ourĀ limiting beliefs. Why is it thatĀ we spend energy feeding into theĀ negative narrative about how our lifeĀ is supposed to be? We tellĀ ourselves that life is meant to be stressful, money is always an issue, we don’t have enough support fromĀ friends and family, nobody understands us, it’s difficult to find a partner, our ideal body is impossible, etc. Maybe one of these may sound familiar to you: “money has always been a problem growing up, so I will continue to live paycheck by paycheck” or “dating is lame and all the good ones are taken” or “my life is a series of stressful events. I can never catch a break”Ā Overtime we condition our minds to believe these statements as our truth. Ā The more we plantĀ these negative thoughtsĀ into our mind, the more it becomes our reality. Remember our thoughts affect our actions and our actions create our reality. And then weĀ wonder why we’re stressed, broke, lonely, single, and fat šŸ™„

It’s absurd the amount of sabotage we inflict on ourselves. Beginning today, simply change your narrative. Tell yourself that life is meant to be enjoyed, money comes easily, my friends want to see me succeed, my soulmate is out there waiting for me, I deserve a body I am in love with. Tell yourself that the universe is on your side andĀ conspires in helping you achieve whatever it is that you want. Stop playing the victim; there is an abundance of support and joy if you seek it.

Let’s stop feeding into our negative narrative. That shit is depressing and we’reĀ wasting our energy.Ā You are the creator of your life,Ā the writer of your story..

Greatest Compliment I Ever Received

No, it wasn’t about my superbly charming, intelligent, and romantic personality. IĀ getĀ that all the time.

Last nightĀ I received the greatest compliment ever. I am still so humbled that my heart wants to silently burst. At the dinner table, my mom randomly told me, “Ever since you started practicing yoga and meditation, you’ve become a lot calmer.” A little caught off guard,Ā I replied, “Wait are you asking or telling me?” “I’m telling you. You’ve become a lot less reactive and easily upset.” I just about died.

You see, myĀ very favorite part of a yoga practice is when weĀ set ourĀ intentionĀ at the beginning of class.Ā WhyĀ did we come today to our mat?Ā Is it to relieve stress and anger? Is it to get a nice stretch? There is no right or wrong; it’s whatever you want to get out of theĀ next hour. Mine has always beenĀ the same. Simply put, I step onto my mat to find patience. Having patienceĀ helps me becomeĀ mindful, therebyĀ allowing me toĀ easilyĀ seekĀ compassion and gratitude in all areas of life.

Patience has always been a problem for me.Ā I’m easily irritable and fussy (#VirgoProblems) and it’s hard to get me out of that funk.Ā Sometimes IĀ react harshly, or perhaps passive aggressively, and every single time I regret my actions afterwards. I solely acted on my irritation, not based off logic. I let my emotions control me, when reallyĀ IĀ should be the one in control of my emotions.

I will continually be annoyed by things people say and do. Just as IĀ will say or do things that annoy others. It’s a fact of life. But as soon as I’m mindful aboutĀ myĀ irritated feeling, I immediatelyĀ breathe. No, really. Like intentionally take a deep inhale then a deep exhale. So deep that the breath is audible. I thenĀ ask myself, “How can I respond in a logical, respectful manner so I can better understand where they are coming from? I know they didn’t mean to intentionally irritate me so what made them say or do that?” This results in a cordial Ā interaction based off reasoning and wisdom, not off temporary fiery emotions.

It’s amazing how much weight can be lifted off your mind and heart when you possess patience. Now you have more room for love, compassion, kindness, gratitude. Yoga taught me that.

Be Still. Be Mindful. Be Easy. Woosah.

love, julie

2017 March Favorites! Sunday Riley, Big Magic, Dr. Dennis Gross

Hi beautiful people! March went by freakishly fast. I was able to enjoy two skincare products (obsessed with all things skincare), a great book, and discovered an amazing artist! Check out my YouTube video hereĀ where I explain in detail. Or if you prefer to read, check out the products below! ā¤

  1. Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment
I got samples of these from Sephora last month. They are seriously one of the best things I ever put on my face. Within 3 minutes, my skin plumped up and gave me a gorgeous glow! No wonder why it’s $158 for a small bottle. I even got a compliment after a sweaty hot yoga sesh about my skin which, trust me, never happens. Legit made my day! And it was all thanks to this product.
  2. Dr. Dennis Gross Glow Pads
I first heard these from one of my favorite blogsĀ Mix and Match Mama! I’m not sure if/whatĀ Shay, a 30-some year old mother of 4 from Dallas, and I have much in common but I’ve been reading her blogs for YEARSĀ šŸ™‚ She’s always raves about these glow pads so I tried them out myself. I’ve used Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel Extra StrengthĀ many times before but never this tanning version. I have to say, this really does give you the most natural “sun-kissed” glow in the fastest, most effortless way possible. It’s a toilette that you rub all over your face. Check out the video where I go into more details!
  3. Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear
This book has given me life. For someone who quit theirĀ corporateĀ job 2+ months ago to pursue a life with purpose and creativity, Big Magic came at the perfect time. Elizabeth Gilbert encourages us to embrace our curiosity in life. I now have such a different approach to my form of my creativity (blogging/YouTube) after reading this book. And it’s to approach it with zeroĀ expectations. Do this because you have a story to share. Not because you need to make money from this. And not because you want to teach anybody anything. Do it for yourself.
I recently discovered this duo from Seattle, Washington and have been OBSESSED with them. Their music has a dreamy, euphoric vibe that makes you feel good. I even set my alarm tone in the morning to their music and it seriously makes getting up much easier. I don’t even turn it off sometimes. Give them a try! Some recommended songs: Say My Name (ft. Zyra), All We Need (ft. Shy Girls), Sun Models.

I’m one of those weird people who actually enjoy seeing what you had for lunch. It’s just interesting to see people’s daily diet and also gives me meal ideas. I filmed and edited a short video about what I typically eat here! After I was done editing it, I realized my weekday and weekend meals are totally different ha! I definitely don’t always eat this clean.. at all. That’s why I like to be good M-T and save my calories for the weekend šŸ™‚

How To: Delicious Turmeric Milk/Golden Milk | Benefits of Turmeric!

golden milk thumb 2.jpg

Golden Milk is wonderful to have on a chilly day when you need to warm up or right before bed time to help wind down. Turmeric is widely known to reduce joint pain, improve digestive health, boost the immune system and a million other things. Even my face wash has turmeric in it to help with acne and evening out my complexion! And every time I feel extra bloated from a meal, taking a capsule or two of turmeric always helps with my digestion.

I made a video on how to make itĀ here!Ā It’s a quick 2 minute tutorial šŸ˜€

1 cup of milk
1 tsp of turmeric powder
1 tbsp of coconut oil
1/2 tsp of honey
1/2 tsp of cinnamon
1/4 tsp of grounded ginger

Important to note – it’s popular to add a pinch of black pepper to this recipe to help with the absorption of turmeric while adding a nice chai-like taste. Play around with the ingredients/measurements and find what you like best!

Have any of you tried it? How do you like it?
